Door Styles And The Wood Movement That Limits Them
A door is a movement problem before it is a style
Cabinet doors get chosen from a picture. They get judged, two winters later, by whether the reveal between two doors went from even to wedge shaped, and whether anything cupped. Those outcomes were decided by the construction, not the profile, and the mechanism behind all of them is dimensional change in wood.
How much wood actually moves
Wood barely changes length along the grain. Across the grain it changes a lot. Red oak shrinks and swells roughly 4 percent tangentially and about 2 percent radially across its full range of moisture content. In practical terms, an interior moisture content swing of 4 percentage points, which is an ordinary year, moves a 12 inch wide flatsawn panel by something in the range of 3/32 to 3/16 inch.
That is the number every door construction is trying to hide.
Why the five piece door floats its panel
A five piece door is two stiles, two rails and a centre panel. The stiles and rails are narrow, usually 2 to 2 3/8 inches, so their own cross grain movement is a few hundredths of an inch and nothing notices. The panel is wide, so it is not glued in. It sits loose in a groove roughly 3/8 inch deep with clearance left on each edge, held centred by small rubber balls or foam strips rather than adhesive.
The frame therefore stays a fixed size while the panel expands and contracts inside it. When a raised panel door is painted rather than stained, the paint bridges the gap between panel and frame in summer, and in dry winter air the panel retreats and leaves a thin unpainted line along the groove. That line is proof the panel is free to do what it was designed to do.
The solid slab across a season
A slab door glued up from solid staves is one wide piece of wood with nowhere to put its movement. A 15 inch wide solid slab in a valley home can gain and lose an eighth of an inch of width between a humid August and a heated February, and reveals that were set at 1/8 inch in the shop tighten or open visibly. Worse is cupping. If the two faces reach different moisture contents, because the inside face is sealed against a cabinet interior and the outside face breathes, the slab curves and the corner stands proud of the frame.
Solid slab doors can be made to work. It takes narrow staves with alternating growth ring orientation, equal finish film build on both faces including the edges and the back, and acclimation before machining.
What a dry inland valley does
Summer here is genuinely arid, and winter adds forced air heat to already cold dry outside air, so indoor relative humidity can sit under 20 percent for weeks. Wood equilibrates toward roughly 5 percent moisture content in those conditions and toward 9 or 10 percent during a humid stretch. That is a wider annual swing than a coastal home sees, and it moves in the drying direction, which is the direction that opens joints rather than closing them.
The practical consequences are consistent. Mitred stile and rail frames, where the joint runs at 45 degrees, open at the outside corner and show a hairline that no finish hides. Cope and stick joints, which run square, hide movement far better.
Which constructions tolerate it best
- An MDF five piece door with a routed groove and either an MDF or veneered panel. MDF moves very little with humidity, so a painted door built this way holds its joint lines. Its weakness is water at the bottom edge, not seasonal air.
- A solid hardwood cope and stick frame with a floating panel, stained rather than painted. Movement still happens, but a stained finish and a square joint make it invisible.
- A veneered slab over a stable core. The core does not move, the veneer follows it, and there is no joint to open. This is the quietest performer in a dry climate.
- Thermofoil and rigid laminate over a substrate, dimensionally stable, but vulnerable to heat at the edge above a dishwasher or a wall oven.
Ask what the panel is made of, ask whether it is glued or floating, and ask whether the frame corners are mitred or square. Three answers will tell you how the door will look after four seasons of valley air.
